Veterans Educational Benefits

The Admissions office at UCNJ is the liaison with the VA Regional processing Office in Buffalo, NY to assist veterans, dependents of veterans, reservists and National Guardsmen/women with the application and certification process. This office will  assist the student to apply for their respective education benefits for the Montgomery GI Bill under Chapter 30,31,32,35,1606,1607,VEAP or Post 9-11/CH 33. Questions regarding the eligibility of a veteran or dependent can be answered by calling 1-888-GIBILL1 or e-mailing the VA at www.gibill.va.gov

Chapter 30

Members of the armed forces who entered active duty for the first time after June 30, 1985, have remaining entitlement under the Vietnam Era GI bill or those who switched from the VEAP program before being involuntarily separated after February 2, 1991. Student must fill out VA Form 22-1990-Application for Educational Benefits at http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp. Copy of DD-214(Member Copy #4) and the certificate of eligibility from the VA are to be submitted to the admissions office.

Chapter 31-Disabled Veterans

Veterans having a service connected disability that entitles them to veteran compensation can receive tuition and fees paid to the  college under this program. The Department of Veterans Affairs in Newark, NJ  must submit VA Form 28-1905-Authorization and Certification of Entrance and Reentrance Into Rehabilitation and Certification of Status Form to the admissions office. This form allows UCNJ to bill the VA for tuition and fees at the time of registration.

Chapter 32-Veterans Educational Assistance Program(VEAP)

This program provides financial assistance for members of the armed forces who initially entered the armed services after December 31, 1976.

Post 9-11 Chapter 33-Post 9/11 GI Bill

Veterans who have served at least 90 days in active duty service since September 10, 2001. Students must fill out VA Form 22-1990-Application for Education Benefits at http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp. Copy of DD-214(Member Copy 4) must be submitted to the admissions office. Submission of Form 22-1990 or certificate of eligibility(approval) from the VA is required for UCNJ to bill the VA for tuition and fees. At the time of registration. The BAH for UCNJ effective January 2011 is 1,992.00 a month. The percentage of eligibility for the Chapter 33 benefit as defined by the VA will determine the exact BAH benefit for each veteran.

Chapter 35-Survivor’s and Dependent’s Educational Assistance

Surviving spouses and children of veterans who died of a service connected death, disability, or surviving spouses and children of veterans with a permanent service connected disability. Students submit VA Form 22-5490-Application For Survivor’s and Dependent’s Educational Assistance at http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp . A certificate of eligibility must be submitted by the student to the admissions office in order to be certified.

Chapter 1606-Selected Reserve Program

This benefit is for students who are currently serving in the selected reserves. This includes the New Jersey National and Air National Guard. Complete VA form 22-1990-Application For Educational Benefits at http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp to apply for GI Bill benefits. Form  2384 Notice of Basic eligibility(NOBE) needs to be submitted to the admissions office along with copy of a DD-214(Member copy 4-long form). The NOBE is issued by the student’s reserve unit.  If the student is in the National or Air National Guard a complete application for financial aid must be on file with UCNJ in order to use the tuition waiver. This form is issued to the student from their local reserve unit.

Chapter 1607-REAP

This benefit is for students who are currently serving in the selected reserves and were ordered to go on active duty. Complete VA Form 22-1990-Application for Educational Benefits at http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp to apply for GI Bill benefits. A copy of a DD-214(Member 4-long form) needs to be submitted to the admissions office.
